Preserving History
Sometimes to move forward we have to take down the past. It’s not always easy to remove old barriers to make way for new roads such in the case of the Howard Deem’s Garage in Muscatine, Iowa. The decision was made to remove a historical building to accommodate a changing city.
This Historical Booklet
preserves not only the history of the city of Muscatine but is a record of the American Automobile Industry. A 32 page historical document to be held at Muscatine’s City Hall and Library. This booklet features vintage photographs, maps, advertisements and modern photographs documenting the automobile industry in Muscatine Iowa, through the lens of Howard Deems Garage. The client was looking for an old feel to the book that highlighted the automobile aspects and not feel western. Pulling inspiration from vintage auto manuals and repair books like Chilton’s. Pages were tinted and stained with grease to give it that worn, garage feel like a repair book. Fonts were presented to the client that were often used in marketing materials for automobiles as well as period fonts.
With the combination of period pieces and modern day pieces being presented side by side a warm tone and subtle editing tricks were applied to the artwork to build cohesiveness throughout the book.
